Dry Socket Symptoms,Treatments and Avoiding Dry Socket
After removing a tooth it is very common that you have pain and discomfort. Usually within few days it will be normal .Sometimes pain continues foul odor might experienced. This may be due to dry socket problem (Alveolar osteitis).
When tooth is extracted there will be a hole in the bone (Socket) .Usually blood clot is formed at the socket in few days and healing continues. The blood clot protects the bone and nerves. If this blood clot is dislodged or dissolve bone and nerves are expose to outer environment which lead to infections and severe pain experienced. The common symptoms of dry socket are severe pain and the bad breath.


Treatments for dry socket
If you have pain you can try some of these at home
1.Pain killer like Aspirin can be taken to reduce the discomfort.
2. Clove oil can be used for instant relief- Cotton ball dipped in clove oil is placed for few minutes will reduce pain apply 3 times per day.
3. Rinse with hydrogen peroxide prevents infections.
4. Rinse with warm salt water.
If pain continues you need more powerful drugs, cleaning of the socket and dressing which should be done by professionals. Consult your dentist for further treatments .Antibiotics, mouthwash and could be used on the recommendation of the dentist.
How to prevent dry socket problem
Some drugs might reduce the blood clotting ability. Birth control pills containing Estrogen might reduce blood clotting. Discuss these things with your dentist before extraction of tooth.
1. Avoid smoking for few days before and after tooth extraction.
2. Do not drink using straw after tooth removal.
4. Do not often spiting and washing of mouth.
5. Do not use mouthwash or rinse unless recommends.
